The sequence of events when a lockdown is announced:
The T-bar and the attached cable will be stored in the teacher's desk until needed. At the sound of a lockdown procedure, the teacher retrieves and slides the T-bolt into the carriage and through the open latch mounted on the door frame. One end of the cable loop is pre-attached to the T-bar, and the other end of the looped cable is inserted into the 3/4" hole with the rubber insert through the door. When the combination lock box is open, the looped cable will be visible to First Responders. After an all-clear is announced, the teacher withdraws the T-bolt and the cable from the door and returns them to the teacher's desk drawer.
Important:
Safety requirements for classroom doors vary from location to location. Before ordering any auxiliary door locking devices, always comply with all applicable building and fire codes, life safety codes, and state, local, and federal laws and regulations. Requirements for school classroom doors in one area may not be approved in another. Installation should be performed by qualified personnel. Training for school administrators and teachers, including substitute teachers, on using the locking device should be performed regularly, and maintenance inspections must be conducted routinely. The combination code for the lock box can be changed as needed. School administrators may want to provide the code to first responders, giving them access to the classrooms in case of an attack from an intruder.
